April Fools' Facts

* The exact origin of April Fools' Day is unknown, but in 1539 Flemish poet Eduard de Dene wrote of a nobleman who sent his servant on foolish errands on April 1st *

* The name "April Fools" echos that of the Feast of Fools, which is a Medievel holiday. The Feast of Fools, however, was held on December 28th *

* In the Middle Ages, New Years' Day was celebrated on March 25 in most European villages. In some areas of France, New Year's was a week-long holiday ending on April 1. So it's possible that April Fools originated because those who celebrated on January 1 made fun of and taunted those who celebrated on other dates *

* In Scotland, April Fools' Day is celebrated for two days. The second day is devoted to pranks involving the posterior region. It is called Taily Day. The origin of the "kick me" sign can be traced to this observance *

Famous Pranks

* The BBC television program Panorama ran a famous hoax in 1957, showing Italians harvesting spaghetti from trees. They claimed that the annoying pest, the spaghetti weevil, had been eradicated. A large number of people contacted the BBC wanted to know how to cultivate their own spaghetti tree *

* In 1998, Burger King rand an ad in USA Today saying that people could now order a Whopper for left-handed people.
